Makailah is an associate in the firm’s Richmond office.
During her time in law school, she gained valuable experience as a student attorney in the Advanced Administrative Litigation Clinic (Black Lung), where she represented coal miners and their spouses. Her role involved consulting with medical experts and advocating before administrative law judges to receive federal black lung benefits for her clients.
Makailah was also actively involved in the Black Law Student Association, serving as a Mock Trial Coach, and was a mentor with the First-Generation Student Union, supporting the development and success of first-generation law students.
She enhanced her legal experience as a judicial intern for the Honorable Lisa M. Lorish at the Court of Appeals of Virginia. An experience that provided her with invaluable insights into Virginia’s appellate practice.
A Virginia native, Makailah's legal career has been a lifelong aspiration. She was influenced by her prior work as a pharmacy technician, which ignited her interest in health law and shaped her career goals. Outside of her professional life, she enjoys traveling, exploring new cuisines, and wine tasting.
