In Memoriam: Charles Yancey Sipe
The attorneys and staff of Kiernan Trebach mourn the loss of our beloved partner and friend, Charles Yancey Sipe.
Charles joined Kiernan Trebach as a partner in July 2021. He was an accomplished advocate and a generous mentor. His experience, judgment, and professionalism earned the admiration and respect of everyone with whom he worked.
After earning his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Virginia and his Juris Doctor from George Mason University School of Law, Charles began his legal career by serving in a judicial clerkship for the Circuit Court of Virginia’s 31st Judicial District. He then practiced as an associate attorney with St. John, Bowling & Lawrence in Charlottesville, Virginia, from 1993 to 1997 before joining Goodman, West & Filetti, later Goodman Allen Donnelly, where he spent more than two decades building a statewide reputation for excellence in healthcare defense litigation and trials.
For more than 30 years, Charles devoted his practice to the defense of healthcare providers and facilities, earning recognition as one of Virginia’s leading medical malpractice and professional liability defense attorneys. He successfully represented physicians, hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, assisted living communities, dentists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals throughout the Commonwealth and neighboring jurisdictions.
Charles loved being a trial attorney, obtaining defense verdicts in more than twenty-four jurisdictions across Virginia as well as U.S. District Courts. Charles earned a reputation for exceptional courtroom advocacy, sound judgment, and unwavering professionalism. He was recognized with Martindale-Hubbell’s AV Preeminent® Peer Review Rating, reflecting the highest standards of legal ability and professional ethics. Charles’s clients valued not only his legal acumen, but also his practical advice, integrity, and steadfast commitment to their interests.
Charles’s influence extended well beyond the courtroom. He generously and patiently shared his knowledge and experience with other attorneys and colleagues, serving as a mentor, leader, and trusted source of counsel. His calm demeanor, thoughtful guidance, and genuine concern for others made him a respected presence within our firm, the legal profession, and the broader healthcare community.
While his professional accomplishments were remarkable, Charles’s greatest pride was his family. He is survived by his wife, Cameron, and their three children, Charles Yancey Sipe Jr., Landon Clark Sipe and Ann Carter Sipe whom he loved deeply and spoke of often.
Charles leaves behind a lasting legacy of excellence, integrity, service, and friendship. He will be greatly missed by his partners, colleagues, clients, family and friends, and his impact on those who had the privilege of knowing and working with him will endure for many years to come.
